El trabajo conjunto de cuatro estados ganó un premio nacional

La semana pasada Edda y yo viajamos a Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, para recibir un premio nacional por la revista en español Enlace Latino. Todo comenzó durante la conferencia  nacional de los departamentos de Extensión de familia y ciencias del consumidor en New Mexico hace dos años.

Enlace Latino es una revista educativa que informa sobre muchos aspectos  que influyen en los  hogares y en las familias. Los temas incluyen nutrición, salud, finanzas, relaciones de familia y vivienda. Toda la información que se ofrece a los lectores latinos, está basada en investigaciones y traducida al español.

Las colaboradoras de la revista son: Diana Romano de la Universidad de Oklahoma, Traci Armstrong de la Universidad de Arizona, Liz Brushen-Cartagena de la Universidad de Kansas,  y  Andrea Scarrow, Edda, y yo, de la Universidad de Georgia. Yo soy también la editora de la revista.

Abby DeReimer realiza el diseño de la revista. Abby es la diseñadora gráfica del departamento de comunicaciones del condado de Gwinnett. La revista se publica cada tres meses en internet y  se envía por correo electrónico a cada colaboradora para que la distribuya en su comunidad, en su condado y en todo su estado.

Cada edición ofrece  información nueva. Hay recetas de las que más les gusta a la gente con los valores nutricionales incluidos.

Eventos especiales y anuncios sobre clases y programas de cada colaboradora se publicarán empezando el otoño, para que los lectores se enteren sobre las actividades futuras.

The collaborative work of four States won a national award

Last week Edda and I traveled to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, to receive a national award for the newsletter in Spanish called Enlace Latino. It began two years ago during the National Extension Family and Consumer Sciences conference in New Mexico.

Enlace Latino is an educational newsletter that covers many subjects that impacts families and homes. The ones covered nutrition, health, finances, family relations and housing. All the information that is provided to the Latino readers is research based and is translated into the Spanish.

Contributors to the newsletter are: Diana Romano from Oklahoma State University, Traci Armstrong from Arizona State University, Liz Brushen-Cartagena from Kansas State University, and Andrea Scarrow, Edda, and me, from the University of Georgia. I am also the editor of the newsletter.

The newsletter layout is done by Abby DeReimer, the graphic designer at the communication department of Gwinnett County Government. The newsletter is published quarterly on line. It is also sent via e-mail to each contributor who distributes it in their own communities, counties, and States.

Each newsletter offers new information. In each edition of Enlace Latino there is a recipe, which is chosen from ones that people enjoy the most, with the nutritional value calculated.

Starting this fall, special events and announcements from each contributor will be posted for readers to learn more about upcoming programs and events.

¡La exhibición de la feria de Gwinnett fué un éxito!

Estoy en el centro de la foto rodeada por algunas de las voluntarias de la Asociación Internacional de Administradoras  Profesionales de Gwinnett County. En el fondo se aprecian algunos de los objetos que participaron en la exhibición.  

La exposición en la Feria de Gwinnett County del 2013 fué un éxito. Más de 150 adultos y 90 jóvenes vinieron al parque de atracciones de Gwinnett el pasado lunes, 9 de enero para inscribir sus trabajos artísticos, de bordado y costura, fotografias, decoración de navidad, y otros artículos artísticos, en el concurso que cada año organiza la Extensión de Gwinnett y el departamento de Familia y Ciencias del consumidor de la Universidad de Georgia.

France Hernandez de Extensión y yo, con dos personas pensionadas de Extensión, trabajamos con 14 voluntarias de  la Asociación Internacional de Administradoras  Profesionales de Gwinnett County, lideradas por Phyllis Lowe. Recibimos más de 1.200 artículos de los participantes. Los artículos se clasificaron y marcaron de acuerdo al tipo de trabajo realizado, para así escoger los ganadores el martes en la tarde.

Por casi tres horas, los 27 jueces invitados, estudiaron cada artículo para determinar el mejor trabajo presentado en cada categoría. Entre los jueces se encontraban cinco agentes pensionadas de Familia y Ciencias del consumidor, fotógrafos profesionales, y profesores con experiencia. Al terminar los jueces, nuestra tarea final fue preparar la exhibición de todos los artículos.  A los artículos ganadores se les puso cintas de colores.

Estoy agradecida por el trabajo tan duro hecho por France con la formas y todo el papeleo, y por Kitty Shepard por su conocimiento y ayuda de la exhibición durante los dos días, Por último estoy agradecida por el trabajo de las voluntarias con quienes compartí cuentos y chistes durante el montaje de la exhibición el martes en la tarde.

Gracias a todas por su esfuerzo y colaboración que hicieron que la la exhibición de la feria de Gwinnett fuera un éxito.

The Fair Exhibition was a success!

The Gwinnett County Fair Exhibition for 2013 was a success. More than 150 adults and 90 youths came to the Gwinnett fairgrounds this past Monday, January 9th to enter their art work, needle work, pictures, Holiday Houses, and other items, into the contest that the Family and Consumer Sciences of the University of Georgia Gwinnett Extension organizes every year.

France Hernandez from the Extension and I, along with two Extension retirees worked together with 14 volunteers of the International Association of Administrative Professionals of Gwinnett County, led by Phyllis Lowe. We received more than 1,200 items made by the participants. The items entered were marked and classified according to the type of work for judging on Tuesday afternoon.

For almost three hours, the 27 invited judges, studied each item to determine the best work submitted in each category. Among the judges were five retiree Family and Consumer Sciences Agents, professional photographers, and experienced teachers. After the judges finished their review, the last task was to prepare the display of all the entries. The winning items had ribbons attached to them.

I am thankful for the hard work done by France with all of the forms and paper work, and for Kitty Shepard with her firsthand knowledge with the exhibit during the entire two days. Lastly I am grateful for the work of the volunteers with whom I share stories and jokes with while displaying the items on Tuesday afternoon.

¡Es tiempo de unirse a Walk Georgia!

El domingo pasado en la pista de carreras del Atlanta Motor Speedway, participé en la “Caminata Familiar”, un evento en donde se promovió el primer día de inscripción del programa Walk Georgia. Más de 1000 personas disfrutaron de esta actividad cuyo propósito es el de mantenerse activo y saludable, algunos de ellos aprovecharon la oportunidad para inscribirse y participar en el programa Walk Georgia.

Walk Georgia es un programa gratuito de 12 semanas auspiciado por la Extensión Cooperativa de la Universidad de Georgia y respaldado en parte por la fundación Coca Cola. El programa está diseñado para ayudar a la gente a llevar un registro de su actividad física, y a mantenerlos activos y saludables. El tiempo que usted pasa realizando su  actividad física favorita se convierte en millas de manera que  usted viaja de manera “virtual” a través del bello estado de Georgia.  Usted tiene la oportunidad de competir amistosamente con otros residentes de su condado y de ver su progreso en el transcurso de algunas semanas. Inés y yo estamos en una competencia amistosa para descubrir cuál de nuestros condados, Gwinnett o DeKalb tiene más participantes en este programa.

It’s time to join Walk Georgia!

Last Sunday at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, I participated in the “Family Track Walk”, an event were we promoted the first day of registration for Walk Georgia. More than 1,000 people enjoyed this activity which purpose is to stay active and healthy. Many of them took the opportunity to register and participate in the Walk Georgia program.

Walk Georgia is a free 12-week program sponsored by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension,  and supported in part by the Coca Cola Foundation. It is designed to help people to maintain a record of their physical activity, and motivate them to stay active and healthy. The time you spend doing your favorite activity is converted into miles so you can travel “virtually” across the beautiful state of Georgia. You have the opportunity to engage in a friendly competition with other residents of your county and see your progress throughout the weeks. Ines and I are engaged in our own friendly competition to discover which county, Gwinnett or DeKalb, has more participants!
