Seasoning … is not only for the turkey!

In anticipation of the Thanksgiving Holiday, we might be reminiscing about the many memories we held related to this special time of the year. Many of us will be  traveling to get to the table on time , while others will gather closer at home, to share that special meal…. or two.  Which one is your favorite recipe? Can you smell it? How pretty does it look? This time of the year brings us joy, but also concerns about overindulging and doing things that could jeopardize the progress we have made on our search for ultimate health.

But let’s see the bright side of the holiday; we will have time to prepare our favorite meal, so let’s reduce the amount of sugar, fat and salt, by replacing them with healthy and savory spices that promise to provide  flavor, health benefits and with virtually zero calories. I really enjoy using many of them: oregano for heart health; garlic powder and basil to replace the taste of salt; cinnamon and cloves to replace the taste of sugar, and bay leaf, tarragon, marjoram, and parsley, to season my turkey. But wait a second! This is also a special time when we have the opportunity to “season” the lives of those we love and care for. Take time to talk, to play and to make new memories. Take advantage of the opportunity to come together and initiate meaningful conversations. Share with others the reason you are all thankful for. Researchers agree that those who are grateful tend to practice healthy behaviors and have stronger immunologic systems. And do not forget to take time to plan your next opportunities to volunteer and get involve in serving others in need….. something that makes my heart pound!

Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday, make it count and don’t forget that you can “season” more than the turkey!
